So, after doing those 10 minute painting exercises, I decided to try a painting for 5 minutes and see what I could come up with.

I started this yesterday at work for a few minutes and it was just a bunch of value blobs all over the place. I eventually started fleshing things out today and I finished it in a little over an hour.

So, onto MUCH quicker paintings. A friend of mine is really rusty with painting in Photoshop. I had an idea and I basically made him do these exercises without warning and I'm glad he jumped into them. I told him that I'd find an image of a simple object online and we'd both paint the object. The main thing was that we had ONLY 10 minutes to paint whatever the object was. I made the time short to force him to make decisive brushstrokes in his paintings because I noticed that his mark-making was very hesitant and not very confident at all. So, we did 5 paintings in total. We alternated finding the object images. The main thing I was looking for in the objects I found was to find objects with different materials. Glass, metal, ceramic, rubber, etc...

So, who found what object scrap? Well-

me: teapot
him: wooden car
me: french press
him: some really weird ronald mcdonald toy
me: red wagon

So, here are my 10 minute paintings. I only used one brush as well.

It was really fun painting this fast for the both of us, but especially him. We're looking forward to doing these exercises more in the future.

Wow...a big shocker! I just read it and I had been looking around for rental houses for the next month in the SF area since I was supposed to go work there on a project as a concept artist.

Best of luck to all who worked there.
