About an hour's worth of messing around with my regular flat brush.PSCS5
I think something like evil European female scientist came to mind.
I bought CS5 the day after it came out and I've been messing with the 'painterly' brushes. So far, they're not that great and somewhat slow. Keep in mind that I have a Macbook Pro with a 2.8 Ghz Intel Core 2 duo and 8GB of RAM with over 5GB of RAM allocated to CS5.
The mixer brush does what it's supposed to do and smear/somewhat blend edges like a wet oil brush, but that's about it.

So, a quick update. I messed around with the brushes some more this morning and I selected the mixer brush preset and chose random brushes that came default with PS and ones that I've made. With that combo, the only ones that really look ok are with the new fan brushes. You can't have shape dynamics on with the painterly brushes and you can't have shape dynamics on with a lot of brushes. I find that strange just because if you were really painting with a brush, you would turn the brush on its side to get a thin stroke. You can't do that in PS with this combo.
Here are a few images of more brush testing.
Here are the brushstrokes(painterly brushes with the default brush preset) with 'transfer' turned on. This option used to be called 'other dynamics' in previous versions of PS.

This image is a comparison. I grabbed this iceberg image off of the internet to test how the mixer brush plus the new painterly brushes would work together. As I was saying above, the fan brushes look way better than the other painterly brushes and they seem to handle the smeary look better than the default brushes(used in conjunction with the mixer brush preset) that come with PS. I'll have to do more testing to get some conclusive opinions on that.

I started this almost 2 months ago while waiting for work at a studio. I finally got a chance to finish it the other day. I first started with carving out shapes with no intention of doing this character until the silhouette reminded me of him. I spent a little more than an hour on it.
